Church Giving and Giving to the Church

The Lyon Anglican Church is financially self-supporting. The chaplain’s stipend, the maintenance of the Vicarage, the rent payable for the rue de Créqui chapel, and all the running expen ses of the church are met out of church giving by the church members. For this reason members are encouraged to put their church giving on a regular basis, using either a bank standing order payment or the monthly giving envelopes. There are tax advantages for those using the envelope scheme. Contrary to what some people would like to believe, there is no hidden subsidy from the Church of England!

Some American families choose to channel their giving through CAF. American families coming from a culture of church going as consumption are perhaps readier to give generously than some British families who come from a culture of church-going as obligation. There is no pressure to tithe. But we are aware of Paul’s teaching that thin sowing (Paul is talking about money) means thin reaping and that ‘God loves a cheerful giver’ (2 Corinth 9: 6-7).

For several years the church has tithed its own income in support of other Christian ministry and mission. Organisations and individuals whom we currently support or have recently supported include:
  • Anne Meynier, working with AGAPE (formerly Campus Crusade) in Lyon

  • l’Armée du Salut, working with the homeless and those in need in Lyon

  • Chris Burrell, on placement with Wycliffe Bible Translators in Cameroon

  • ICS, the Intercontinental Church Society, an Anglican missionary society, with whom the Lyon Church has been in partnership for many years

  • Mercy Ships, operating a fleet of hospital ships in developing nations. Julien and Kae Trouilloud, a French IT specialist and a Malaysian pharmcist respectively, from the congregation, have worked on Mercy Ships off the coast of Africa and plan to return to that work.
Donations can be made to the church in either euros or in £ sterling; or through CAF, if desired, from North America The Chaplain will be pleased to put donors in touch with the Church Treasurer.

Pledge

You may not be in a position to give as you wish just now, or you may want to spread your giving over a number of months. In either case, it would be very helpful to know the amount and the approximate date that you intend to give. Obviously you would not be obliged to fulfil your pledge as circumstances can change, but we would hope that such pledges would be honoured if at all possible

TAX BENEFITS

For taxpayers, all donations to the church are eligible to be declared on your tax return and bring substantial advantages.

Please contact the Church Treasurer via Chris Martin for further details concerning donations made from France and from the UK.

In the USA, normal tax benefits for charity donations can also be obtained by giving via CAF America. Cheques in US$ need to be sent to CAF America together with a form which is available for downloading. CAF America will send us a cheque in French Francs after deducting about 7% for currency conversion and other charges, and will send you the necessary certificate for your tax return.
