About the Chaplain and his wife:
Chris Martin has been Chaplain of the Lyon Anglican Church since October 2000. He read History at Balliol College, Oxford, in the 1960s, and then worked in educational publishing for 20 years in London, Paris, and Oxford. His first adult church-going experience was at the Eglise Réformée, in the rue de l’Ouest in Paris, when he was working there for OUP. He came to faith at St Andrew’s, Linton Road, Oxford, under the teaching of Colin Bennetts, in the late 1970s, and trained for ordination at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford.
Chris was fortunate enough to do a curacy under Dennis Lennon, at St Thomas’s, Glasgow Road, Edinburgh. After that he spent 10 years as Rector of Christ Church, Duns, in the Scottish Borders. For much of that time he was a member of the Board of Directors of the National Bible Society of Scotland. His interests include 20th century history, current affairs, food and wine, and coarse gardening. He is a keen rugby supporter, in spite of living close to Bourgoin Jallieu! His heroes include John le Carré and Eugene Peterson. He is less enthusiastic about football supporters, New Labour politicians, lawyers, and bishops. Chris is best known for his dry sense of humour interwoven with sound biblical teaching and an amazing ability to rememember everyone’s names.
Chris has been married to Susie for quite a long time. She is from Scotland. Her father was an Edinburgh GP, and one grandfather was a Church of Scotland missionary in China for 30 years. Susie read Modern Languages at Aberdeen, and then taught English in Frankfurt and French in Oxford. More recently she re-trained as a Counsellor, and is the prime mover in the LAC Counselling service.
Chris and Susie have two children. Joanna lives in High Wycombe, works for DFID in London, and is married
to Craig, a hospital doctor. Jeremy lives in Plymouth, works for an international pharmaceuticals
company, and is about to get married to Anna.
