Friday News - 9th October
“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and don’t do what I say?” Luke 6:46
Dear friends,
This is quite the probing question Jesus asks, isn’t it?
On Sunday we heard what he wrote: “be doers of the word and not hearers only” (James 1:22). James was expressing the same idea, showing us what true faith looks like.
“Lord” is an easy word. We say it on Sunday, we sing it, and we pray it in many languages. But Jesus wants more than words.
He tells a story about two builders. One dug down and built on rock, the other built without a foundation, on sand (Matthew tells us). Then the rain fell, the rivers rose and the wind hit both houses. The house on the rock stood. The house without a foundation fell with a great crash.
Jesus says that to hear his words and not live by them is like building with no foundation. Storms come to every house: work, family, illness, being a long way from home. God’s word doesn’t remove the storm, but it provides us with the foundation we need to endure it.
